Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative: 

Villa Lao Guesthouse practices sustainable tourism through protecting Lao culture, traditions and development.

Villa Lao Guesthouse comprises two traditional Lao style buildings which preserve traditional architecture which is increasingly being replaced by modern, 'western style' buildings which lack character and practicality for the local environment. Not only is local and traditional architecture being preserved, Villa Lao enables guests to gain an insight into traditional Lao life and culture.

All the furnishings, decorations and designs within the bedrooms and guest house are a great representation of Laos, including the ethnic minorities and their handicrafts. All materials and decorations are bought locally including from the famous Luang Prabang night market which helps community development and generates local income.

The guesthouse also conducts cooking classes which teaches guests how to make and eat traditional Lao cuisine. All produce is bought fresh from local markets; again generating local incomes, and helps inform guests of Lao culture including appropriate behaviour to eat and what is traditionally Lao food which is increasingly being blended with Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes.

Villa Lao Guesthouse is approximately 1-2km from the city centre and Mekong River. With bicycles to rent, the guesthouse encourages guests to use this method of transportation to explore Vientiane. By using bicycles instead of motorised tuk tuks or motorbikes, noise and air pollution is reduced, traffic congestion is minimised and health is improved through exercise. Vientiane is an easy and safe city to cycle around.
